Welcome to our new website! Medford, Massachusetts, one of America's oldest communities, was founded in 1630. We are a city shaped by history and enriched by community pride. In our early years, Medford was a renowned seaport that boasted shipyards where famous clipper ships were built and launched. Brick making and the distillation of the world famous Medford Rum were early industries. We are the home of the Commonwealth's first Governor - Matthew Cradock. Paul Revere stopped here on his famous Midnight Ride. George Washington met at the historic Isaac Royall House to discuss Revolutionary War strategy. Lydia Maria Child, an abolitionist and author of the Thanksgiving poem "Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandfather's House We Go", lived here. The famous holiday classic "Jingle Bells" was written in Medford by the Reverend James Pierpont. Famous cook, Fannie Farmer worked on her well known cookbook from her home in Medford. For a time, the renowned aviatrix,
Amelia Earhart called Medford her home as did the notorious "Black Dahlia", Elizabeth Short.
Today, Medford is a vibrant community which is close to Boston, but maintains a small town feel. Our neighborhoods are unique and well cared for. Our schools are state of the art. Our location and accessibility by highway, commuter rail, bus and rapid transit are advantageous for our residents and those who work in our City. We are the home of the internationally acclaimed Tufts University.
