Mayor Michael J. McGlynn announced Saturday at the Green Medford Earth Day event the creation of a Green Awards program to recognize businesses and citizens whose improved energy efficiency, use of renewable energy, and other actions to conserve resources are helping to improve Medford today and in the future

April 24, 2012 Medford Square Clean Up April 28
Celebrate Earth Day by volunteering at the Second Annual Medford Square Clean Up on Saturday, April 28th. Green Medford, the City of Medford, and several other organizations are partnering to give Medford Square a good spring cleaning in honor of Earth Day. The cleanup and related activities run from 9 am to Noon. Volunteers will also be able to participate in green art projects, games, live music, and other activities. Mystic Coffee Roaster and Donuts with a Difference will provide morning refreshments, and other local food will also be featured.

April 23, 2012 Medford environmental planners call for public input
The City of Medford has said it will embark on a two-year environmental planning process, in an effort to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, and is seeking public input next month.

Recently Medford's Director of Energy and Environment, Carey Duques, was a panelist at “Understanding Risks and Rewards: A Conversation on Community Solar” organized by the North East Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA).  The panel discussion was a pre-event to their Building Energy 12 Conference in Boston next month. The session was organized by The Cadmus Group and hosted by Renewable Sales at their location in Holliston, MA.

February 13, 2012 Medford selected for new energy program
The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) recently announced that Medford has been selected to participate in MAPC’s new Local Energy Action Program (LEAP).

February 6, 2012  5 Things: Thermo-Solar Energy to be Considered at Medford High
The city has received a $10,000 state grant to look into whether thermo-solar energy - generated through solar panels - would be feasible at Medford High School, Alicia Hunt, the city's energy efficiency coordinator, said Friday. The energy produced by the panels could potentially be used to heat the high school swimming pool once it is re-opened, she said.

In the middle of Tropical Storm Irene, Alicia Hunt was staring at her computer and cheering for the wind to blow faster. As the storm settled over Medford, she monitored a website that calculates how much energy a city-owned wind turbine is producing.
“It made the same amount of electricity that a house in Medford would use for a month,’’ said Hunt, Medford’s energy efficiency coordinator.

September 2, 2011 BACK TO SCHOOL: Building improvements made to Medford schools
When Medford students return to school on Sept. 7, they will likely notice some new changes to the buildings where they spend most of their days each year.

“The summer of 2011 has been a productive one,” Superintendent Roy E. Belson wrote in an Aug. 23 report to School Committee members. “The buildings are clean, supplies have been ordered and filled and the buildings are ready for a walkthrough and the first day of school.”

It's back to the future - of energy - for Medford public schools.

Schools in Medford are already home to a wind turbine, now there are plans to bring solar panels to elementary and middle schools, Mayor Michael McGlynn announced at a recent school committee meeting.

Medford has a new toy — an unreleased electric/hybrid version of the brand new Toyota Prius — and for the next six weeks, the city will be test driving the vehicle, as part of the company’s research and development program, which lends upcoming models to organizations with fleets of gas-powered cars.

The newest vehicle in Medford's fleet can power up by plugging into any three-prong outlet.
The city is taking part in a test program where municipalities give Toyota's not-yet-released plug-in hybrid Prius as test run.

Over the next few weeks locals might catch a glimpse of a brand new Toyota Prius that isn’t even on the market yet. According to city Energy Efficiency Coordinator Alicia Hunt, Medford is taking advantage of a demonstration program offered by Toyota and will be testing out a plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius that has yet to become available to consumers.

June 28, 2011 - Medford residents get free way to check energy efficiency
Thanks to the Medford Public Library, residents can now plug in to try and save on their energy costs.
Starting this week, four digital "Kill A Watt" energy meters  are available for loan from the Medford Public Library.

On June 27, the Medford Public Library will begin lending packets to library card holders that will help them to track and conserve energy. The Kill-A-Watt electricity usage monitor is a small device that measures how much power a plug-in appliance is using at the moment, and how much energy it consumes over time.

May 24, 2011 - Medford to compete in the 2011 ENERGY STAR National Building Competition
Medford High School has been selected to participate in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR National Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings to help improve the energy efficiency of commercial buildings and protect the environment.

On May 12, the Green Up Clean Up 2010 Organizing Team from Grace Episcopal Church in Medford sat with representatives from the Boston Bruins, the president of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) in Boston’s Faneuil Hall to receive a 2011 EPA Environmental Merit Award.

April 16, 2011 - Mystic River Watershed Association celebrates Earth Day
Medford — Several organizations are joining together for the second consecutive year to coordinate several events for Earth Day in the Lower Mystic River Watershed in Medford, Somerville, Malden, Everett, Chelsea and East Boston. Comprising the “Mystic Community Earth Day,” the events will take place on Saturday, April 30th in honor of Earth Day (April 22nd) and will focus on improving areas along the river, while drawing attention to the needs of the watershed as a whole.
