Medford Police Department’s
Alzheimer’s Special Care Program
Update
The Medford Police Department is seeking to update and expand its Alzheimer’s Special Care Program files. This will ensure that anyone in Medford who is living with the disease will be found quickly and safely if they wander away from home, or from a facility.
Family members of Alzheimer’s patients are encouraged to obtain a program application either at Police Department front desk at 100 Main Street, or from the Medford Senior Center at 101 Riverside Avenue. Completed applications, which must include a recent photo, may then be returned to either location. The photo should be clear, and feature the head and shoulder area.
The Police Department’s method is simple: when an individual is found wandering in the community, and he or she is unclear about his or her name or destination, the individual will be escorted to the Police Department where physical appearance and any other information will be compared to program records. Families who are already participating in the program are encouraged to update information—and their loved one’s photo—at least once a year, or more often if there have been significant changes in appearance or health.
An additional component of the Alzheimer’s Special Care Program is the use of the Police and Fire Departments’ Reverse 911 System. When the Police are notified that an individual with Alzheimer’s disease is missing, a message is sent via telephone to all households in the immediate vicinity of the person’s last know whereabouts. There are no better eyes and ears than the public!
